Physical Therapy for Cycling in Asheville & Black Mountain, NC

Whether you're riding mountain bike trails around Pisgah, climbing the Blue Ridge Parkway, or enjoying miles on the road, pain shouldn't be what determines how far you ride.

At Mountain Wellness & Physical Therapy, we help mountain bikers and road cyclists recover from injuries, improve strength and mobility, and feel more confident on the bike. Our one-on-one approach focuses on understanding what's causing your symptoms and building a plan that supports your riding goals.

Who we work with

Road cyclists
Long climbs, endurance rides, and hours in the saddle place unique demands on your body.

We help road cyclists address pain, improve mobility, and build the strength needed to ride comfortably and efficiently.
Mountain bikers
Technical trails, steep descents, and unpredictable terrain require strength, stability, and control.

We help mountain bikers recover from injuries and develop the physical capacity to handle the demands of the trail.
Riders returning from injury
Whether you're recovering from a crash, surgery, or an injury that's kept you off the bike, we'll help you rebuild strength, restore movement, and work toward getting back to the riding you enjoy.

‍
From the trails of Pisgah and Kitsuma to the climbs along the Blue Ridge Parkway, we understand that cycling is more than exercise. Our goal is to help you stay healthy, strong, and doing what you love.

Cycling injuries we treat

Knee pain
Pain around the kneecap, along the outside of the knee, or during climbing and longer rides. We look at strength, mobility, and movement patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.
IT band & lateral knee pain
Pain or tightness along the outside of the knee that develops during longer rides or repetitive pedaling. We address contributing factors rather than focusing only on where it hurts.
Low back pain
Hours in a forward-leaning position, demanding climbs, and rough terrain can aggravate your back. We help improve mobility, strength, and your ability to tolerate time on the bike.
Neck & upper back pain
Neck stiffness, shoulder tension, or upper back discomfort during longer rides. We assess mobility, posture, strength, and how your body handles sustained riding positions.
Hip & glute pain
Pain or tightness in the front, side, or back of the hip that can affect pedaling, climbing, and comfort in the saddle.
Hand numbness & wrist pain
Numb fingers, tingling, or wrist discomfort from prolonged pressure on the handlebars. We look beyond the hands to assess your neck, shoulders, mobility, and overall riding position.
Crash injuries
From shoulder and wrist injuries to more complex recoveries following a crash, we help you regain mobility, rebuild strength, and safely progress toward riding again.
Foot numbness & Achilles pain
Numb toes, foot discomfort, or Achilles irritation during or after riding. We assess lower-extremity strength, mobility, and potential contributors to your symptoms.

How treatment works

At Mountain Wellness, we believe effective physical therapy goes beyond treating the area that hurts.Pain is often the result of several contributing factors, including mobility limitations, strength deficits, training demands, previous injuries, and recovery habits. We take the time to understand how these pieces fit together.

Your riding history

Mobility
We'll assess mobility throughout your body, particularly your hips, spine, and ankles, to identify restrictions that may affect comfort and performance on the bike.
Stength, core & hip stability
We'll evaluate strength, muscular endurance, balance, and control to better understand how your body handles the physical demands of cycling.

We'll look at how you move and assess the muscles, joints, and other tissues that may be contributing to your symptoms.
A plan you leave with

Cycling PT FAQ

Can I keep cycling while I'm in physical therapy?
In many cases, absolutely! Our goal isn't to automatically take you off the bike. We'll look at your symptoms, training volume, and how your body responds to riding. From there, we'll help you determine what you can continue doing and whether any temporary modifications would be beneficial. We believe movement is an important part of recovery, and whenever possible, we want to help you stay active while you heal.
Do you only treat cycling injuries?
Not at all! We work with active individuals and outdoor enthusiasts who want to stay healthy and continue doing the activities they love. Many of our cyclists also run, hike, strength train, or participate in other outdoor sports. We look at the whole person, not just one activity or injury.
Do you do bike fits?
We don't currently offer traditional bike fitting services. However, we do assess the strength, mobility, and movement limitations that can affect how you feel on your bike. Sometimes discomfort that seems related to bike fit may also involve limitations in your body's ability to tolerate a particular position. If we feel a professional bike fit would be beneficial, we can recommend incorporating one into your overall plan.
Do you do cycling specific strength programming?
Yes! Strength training is an important part of injury prevention, recovery, and cycling performance. We develop individualized strength programs based on your current abilities, riding goals, and areas that need improvement. Whether you're preparing for a big event, working toward longer rides, or simply wanting to feel stronger and more stable on the bike, we can help you build a program that complements your riding.
What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit is a 90-minute, one-on-one evaluation. We'll discuss your symptoms, cycling history, training, previous injuries, and goals. From there, we'll assess your mobility, strength, and movement to better understand what's contributing to the problem. Your evaluation also includes treatment, so we can begin addressing your symptoms that day. You'll leave with a clear understanding of our findings and a plan for moving forward.
Can you help with an old or recurring injury?
Absolutely. In fact, recurring injuries are one of the reasons people seek out our approach to physical therapy. Rather than repeatedly treating the same painful area, we work to identify the underlying factors that may be contributing to the problem. This may include strength deficits, mobility restrictions, training demands, previous injuries, or recovery habits. Our goal is to help you build a more resilient body so you can spend less time managing injuries and more time enjoying your bike.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No. In North Carolina, you can schedule an evaluation with a physical therapist without first obtaining a physician referral. If we identify symptoms that warrant additional medical evaluation or imaging, we'll help guide you toward the appropriate next steps.
Do you take insurance?
Mountain Wellness & Physical Therapy is a cash-based, out-of-network practice. This allows us to provide longer, one-on-one sessions focused entirely on your needs and goals without the limitations often associated with insurance-based treatment. We can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan.
