Climbing PT FAQ

Do I need to be an experienced climber to see you?
Not at all. We work with climbers of different experience levels, from people newer to climbing to experienced indoor and outdoor climbers. Your treatment is built around where you are now and what you want to get back to.
Do you only treat climbing injuries?
No. We're physical therapists who work with active people and outdoor enthusiasts. That means we can look beyond the painful area and consider how strength, mobility, movement, previous injuries, and training may be contributing to the problem.
Do I have to stop climbing while I'm in physical therapy?
Not necessarily. Whenever possible, our goal is to help you stay active while you recover. We'll help you understand what you can continue doing, what may need to be modified temporarily, and how to gradually return to full climbing.
What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit is a 90-minute, one-on-one evaluation. We'll talk about your symptoms and climbing goals, assess your movement, mobility and strength, and take a closer look at the area that's bothering you. Treatment can begin that day, and you'll leave with a plan.
What climbing injuries do you treat?
We treat finger and hand injuries, elbow and forearm pain, shoulder pain and instability, neck and back pain, hip and knee issues, and ankle and foot injuries. We also help climbers return after surgery or time away from climbing.
Can you help with an old or recurring injury?
Yes. You don't need a brand-new injury to benefit from physical therapy. If something keeps coming back, we'll look at what may be contributing to it and build a plan around improving strength, mobility, movement and your ability to tolerate the demands of climbing.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
In North Carolina, you can see a physical therapist without a physician referral. If we feel your symptoms need additional medical evaluation or imaging, we'll help guide you on the appropriate next step.
Do you take insurance?
Mountain Wellness is an out-of-network, cash-based physical therapy practice. This allows us to spend the full visit one-on-one with you and build treatment around your goals rather than insurance restrictions. We can provide documentation for you to submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We can also provide interest-free payment plans so you do not have to forgo seeing us if budget is challenging.
